Some of the physical
strengths and weaknesses
that we have began forming
in us even before we
were born. Then, as
children, we had little
or no control over how
healthy we would become.
But finally we began making choices that
would influence our health. Today we are the sum
total of our heritage plus the many decisions we
have made.
From Adam and Eve we inherited our desire to
sin. During our lifetime we have made decisions
that determine the people we are today.
We have
made decisions that have caused us to be weak or
strong in our spiritual life.
We may be tempted to blame other people for
our present relationship with God, but that would
not help us.
The good news is that from this moment on
you have the potential to make decisions that
will help you grow stronger in spirit. How
strong? There is no limit.
I hope you have made a decision to begin a
new life by believing in Jesus as your Savior;
because then you have the potential to become
more like Jesus. You have the same Holy Spirit to
help you that other Christians have. I recommend
that you carefully read and often repeat:
Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His
might (Eph. 6:10 KJV).
We are limited only by the power of His might!
I have often marveled at the eternal value of
what some Christians have accomplished. They
often wrestled with the question of what it was
that God wanted them to do. Why were they so
successful? As I've studied their lives I've seen that
they studied the Bible to learn what Jesus taught and did. He taught us to give a cup of water to a
thirsty person. No big thing, just something we
could do. He went on to teach us to give our lives
to Him, to do His will. That was a big thing.

What you and I do often boils down to what we
can do. What we actually do is often the result of what we have done in the past. If we, for example, have spent our lives in living for ourselves, our decisions may still be based on that principle. If we have been willing to help others we become more open to the Spirit of Jesus. His Spirit whispers, Do this and you will help one person. We help the best way we know how and He says: there are two more people you can help.
Gradually we hear the voice of God giving us more opportunities. Often the thought comes, "I can't do that." But we can say: "With God's help working in me I can do anything He wants me to do" (see Phil. 4:13). Jesus frequently told and showed His disciples what they could do if they believed.
Our opportunities to do God's work are far greater than we may have realized. The time we still have here on earth can give us more of the peace and joy that Jesus offers. All we have to do is do what we can to help others know Him. He loves to work with willing workers, and He offers us His strength, power and joy to work in and
through us!
Have you made too many mistakes, are too old or too ill for God to help you do something important? No! I remember how ill my grandmothers were before they died, but in their last days here on earth they said things that have influenced my whole life. Until we breathe our last breath God can find ways to use us for good if that is what we want to do. During Jesus' final minutes on earth He gave eternal life to a confessed criminal hanging on a cross beside Him. |

A long time ago I read a little booklet that told how to be saved. There was a picture of our heart with a throne on it. And on that throne we could choose who would rule and reign in our lives. That would be our "God."
When we are born as infants we are firmly entrenched on our own throne. We want our way – all the time. As we grow and mature we learn to share our toys, eat our vegetables, and say and do all the socially proper things. However, in our hearts nothing has changed – we are still on the throne of our hearts. We are still selfish by nature.
In the book of Jeremiah, the prophet got a great revelation from God. He wrote in chapter 17 that the human heart is incredibly wicked and deceitful. He was speaking of all of us. We were born with a sinful nature. That's why it's always so much easier to "blow it" and say or do the wrong thing than to be a shining example of goodness.
Tonight as I was reading the Bible, I came across this verse in Matthew 11:12 where Jesus said:From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of Heaven has been forcefully advancing and forceful men lay hold of it.All of a sudden it was as though a
light clicked on in my spirit. I suddenly understood that it takes a forceful effort to remove ourselves from the thrones of our self-centered hearts. We do not easily give up our self-
important will to Jesus. However, the apostle Paul often spoke of himself as being

the slave of Jesus Christ. So it can be done. We can give Jesus the proper place in our hearts and declare Him our Lord and King.
Daily we make choices – who will be on the throne of my heart? Jesus? Or me? In fact we wrestle with this many times in our day. Sometimes we choose to be selfish. Other times we cry out for God's help to choose to make Christ King in our hearts.
When we truly want to please the Lord, He will help us. Jesus suffered and was tempted in every way that we are (see Heb 2:18) so He understands our struggles.
When we determine that Jesus will have His rightful place of authority in our lives, and we humbly submit to Him, great peace then dwells in our lives.
Happy October Birthday, Mary!

Forty years ago I was set free of acute panic attacks. This happened as I was reading Prison to Praise give to me by a concerned friend. In 1971, as I was lying on my bed in total depression, shades drawn, I reached for the book my friend had given me. As I read, God reached out to me as the words of chapter three penetrated my dark mind. I began to cry out, "Jesus, it's You I've left out!" For over two hours I laughed and cried and got up from that bed washed clean of my twelve years of false teachings. My husband could hardly believe his eyes when he got home from work. He had held me every night for hours as I cried. Since that time, I have had the privilege of speaking in churches, preached the Gospel in Russia, Ukraine and Israel. I also published a book based on praise and truth, and have been on the radio for seven years. These are just a few of the ways your book was used to help many, many others because it set into motion my deliverance. Thank you!

I enjoy giving away Prison to Praise to people I feel need them. I tell folks to read it again and again because you get more spiritual help with each reading.
Adrienne, PA
I've meant to write to you over the years but never got to it. God used Prison to Praise to help heal me of chronic depression and life-long low self esteem. I was given a copy of Prison to Praise when it was first published, and have tried to keep copies to give away. I now work in a printing shop and imagine my surprise when we were given the task printing the covers for Power in Praise. I told everyone that you were my favorite author. Kathy, OR
My friend gave me Prison to Praise about 40 years ago while I was going through a divorce. I needed the "anchor" of praise and thanksgiving in "all things". Thank you for sharing your life with us. Bernice, WI
I picked up Prison to Praise when I went to visit my husband in prison. They were at the reception desk for free. This book is AWESOME! Whenever I have to sit and wait for more than a few minutes, I am reading this book. I'm half way through the book and already wishing I could share with many others. Theresa, NY
You have inspired me for many years – since I first picked up Prison to Praise on a table at my church in Holland in 1971. God bless you both. Sally, CA

A woman was asked by a co-worker, "What is it like to be a Christian?"
The co-worker replied, "It is like being a pumpkin. God picks you from the patch, brings you in, and washes all the dirt off of you. Then He cuts off the top and scoops out all the yucky stuff. He removes the seeds of doubt, hate, greed, etc… and then He carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside of you to shine for the entire world to see."
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall have everlasting life. John 3:16 |
