Does praising the
Lord actually cause
things to happen? Do
circumstances and
events change? I mean,
do they really change?
It depends! First, it
depends upon what
we actually do when
we "praise the Lord."
If we follow certain
prescribed rules in a mechanical way, we can
look back at our efforts and say, "I've done everything
exactly as Merlin Carothers recorded in his
books, but nothing good has happened to me!"
People are seldom successful unless they
reflect inner strength. Unsuccessful people can
blame others – and usually do – but nothing will
substitute for the fervor that makes some people
rise to the top while others sink in discouragement.
Inner strength can be increased as easily as
muscles can be strengthened.
Before praising the Lord will cause events in
our lives to change, most of us must develop
trust in the Lord. We must have inner confidence
in Him! That's faith that works. We can tell God
10,000 times that we trust Him, but He knows
exactly what we believe.
Consider the potential that we have. We can
make our problems work for us! Is such a
thing possible? Yes!
The following is an illustration that may not
seem very spiritual to those of you who have
never served in the military, but please bear with
me. My years in the Army still cause me to think
in terms of how to defeat an enemy. We learned
how to make an individual attacker's weight and strength work for us rather than against us. As
the attacker moved toward us we would grip
some opportune part of his body or weapon,
drop on our backs, and kick our feet into his
body so he would be thrown over our heads and
crash to the ground. The force of his weight and
speed worked for us rather than against us. I'm
not inferring that this was an easy maneuver – as
may be depicted in the movies. It can be tricky,
but it was far better than having the enemy
destroy us!

by Merlin Carothers
Our problems may seem to want to demolish
us. They can knock us down, discourage us
and make us live in fear, until we learn to
make our problems work for us.
Jesus saw the forces that were increasing their
efforts to destroy Him. Even His Disciples were
aware of coming troubles. They wanted Jesus to
take action to save Himself. His reaction was,
"These things must happen to fulfill God's plan".
He was committed to obey the Father. He knew
that His suffering would work for our good and
God's glory.
Does God have a plan for your life and mine?
He promises to make everything work for us if
we trust Him (see Rom. 8:28). That means that
the biggest problem charging down on us can
be used for us. The decision is ours.
Jesus didn't stand still and do nothing. He continued
His mission, just as if He had no problems.
His disciples scattered, and Jesus was murdered,
but to the end He believed God was in control
and that He Himself would be resurrected from
the dead.
When problems attack us, if we fail to trust
God those problems have the potential to knock
us down and out – and the ground can be cold and hard. I know. I've been there. And I've also experienced the joy of having a serious problem work for me. I Chronicles 5:20 says, He heeded their prayer because they put their trust in Him.
Does praising the Lord change things? Yes! But our praise must demonstrate our trust that
God is taking the problem and causing it to work for our good. We don't have to understand
how, when, or what He will do. Our part is to believe Him.
Study what others have learned about the power there is in praising the Lord. Practice praising the Lord. Use praise against the enemy's effort to defeat you, and you will be convinced that praise works! |

Merlin and I receive
many requests for prayer
every day. Some want
God to change their circumstances.
Some prayer
requests are for God to
heal their finances or relationships.
Others are for
physical healing. We do our best to lift each of
these up to the Lord.
But today I want to write about another
problem many folks are facing: Depression. It
is certainly true that the enemy of our souls is
busy in the world today. It is also true that there
are times when a person has a chemical cause
for dark and depressing thoughts.
However, for lots of us, there are some
questions we need to ask ourselves.
Answering these questions honestly will be
hard. But if we want to be free from oppressive
thoughts, if we truly want to be delivered
from this cloud of depression, we must
be honest with ourselves. I am praying that
our wonderful and compassionate Savior
will help us do just that.
When we were in school we read books and
listened to our teachers as they taught us what
we needed to learn. In order to learn, we had to
believe what we read and were told. This pattern
of learning has followed us ever since. We
have a natural tendency to believe what we
read and what we are told by "experts".
So today, we need to stop and think: what
have I been watching and listening to on TV
and movies? What have I been reading? Have all
of these helped me to be growing in trusting
Jesus? Or, have they had a discouraging effect
on me?
What about the wrong thoughts and desires
they give us, such as anger or lust? Or has what
we watched, listened to or read caused us to
desire to become more Christ-like?
As if all that were not enough – how about
the folks we hang out with: friends, neighbors, co-workers, even relatives. Are they encouraging
or discouraging? We do have some control over
them. Often we can say pleasantly, "I really have
to go now". Or, "I must get back to work". Think
ahead to what would be the best way to excuse
yourself.

There is one more area where we need to
check up on ourselves: on what are my
thoughts dwelling? This may come as a surprise
to some, but did you know we can control our
thoughts? What an amazing truth! Proverbs
4:23 tells us to carefully guard our hearts (our
thoughts and emotions) because they will
influence all the other areas of our lives.
Whew! If you have made it this far, be
encouraged. There is help! God truly loves us
and wants us to grow in Christ. He has given us
His Word – the Bible – to help us. Each time we
open it to read, we need to ask Him to help us
learn and understand whatever He wants to
reveal to us. It goes without saying that if we
have difficulty controlling our thoughts, we
should ask the Holy Spirit to guard and guide
our minds.
A trip to a Christian bookstore is a good
place to figure out which Bible translation best
helps you understand God's will for you.
Remember – God is able to watch over His
Word and speak through it to your heart and
mind, regardless of which translation someone
else prefers.
One last thought: Giving praise and thanksgiving
to God is a very pro-active way to overcome
wrong thoughts. If you cannot bring
yourself to give Him thanks and praise for a bad
problem, start by praising and thanking Him for
Who He is, all He has provided for us here on
earth, that He is ultimately in control, for the joy
waiting for us in eternity with Him, for His joy
and strength that He gives us, etc, etc.
PS: The Bible is a rich and glorious source to
learn all the blessings the Lord has provided
for us. Seek and you will find them. |
