I am a different person since Jesus changed me. If anyone does not believe in Him, perhaps they
could try to learn what a different person this
new Merlin is.
Jesus did not make me brilliant or give me the
academic gifts that others may have, but people who knew me said, “What happened to Merlin Carothers?”
The old Merlin felt free to take anything he wanted without feeling guilty. However, if someone
tried to steal from me I would have violently protected whatever I considered to be mine. I was often sad and angry about many things in my life. Some of the people I knew were also sad and
angry about their lives. My confidence in my future was close to zero and I blamed my problems on everyone but myself. To me, people were untrustworthy and unreliable, so I trusted almost no one.
Then I was introduced to Jesus. Suddenly my attitude toward people changed. Through the years I have wanted to help others. Some have wanted help, while others were not interested.
How does Jesus make such big changes in us? He works at a place down deep in our hearts. He changes and keeps changing our thoughts and feelings about everyone. When I think about people
my first impulse is, “What can I do to help them?” God has given me the zeal to help people.
I want to help you! My strength and time are limited but no matter who you are or what you have done my first reaction toward you is, “How can I help you know, trust and love Jesus?”
Jesus always desires to work through us to help others understand His Good News. He accepts, loves and wants everyone to be part of God’s eternal family.
Because Jesus loves us so much we want to be
more like Him. When we fail, we are sad and pray
for strength to do better. He always forgives us
because He understands that our hearts want to
please God.

by Merlin Carothers

If you have failed Him, look up! He says: I will
be merciful to them in their wrongdoings, and I will
remember their sins no more (Heb. 8:12 TLB). What
a miracle this is. God can forgive and forget!
Rejoice and be glad. Shout to God with the
voice of triumph. Sing and make melody in your
heart to the Lord. Believe that God is working for your good as He promises in Romans 8:28. Now you are ready to go into all the world and tell everyone the Good News of what Jesus has done
for you.
Have I made all of this sound too easy? If so, I need to say that it is not easy. Changing a human heart is the most difficult thing that has ever been
done. God knows that we are stubborn, defiant and selfish creatures. Since the first person was created, we have thought first, last, and always about what we want.
God worked out a plan that was so perfect that Satan could not defeat it. God would come to earth, live a perfect, holy life and then credit His own goodness to our account! What a perfect plan. But to receive His free gift we have to believe Him. Not just say we believe. Believe Him, period. Nothing else we try to do will work. Only believing Him will make us a different person. His goodness
makes a grand entrance into the center of our hearts. We are not made perfect but His seed is sown in us. This seed grows and grows. It begins to crowd out the bad things that Satan had sown in us! Our sad hearts become glad hearts.
The old you becomes a new you! This new you wants to tell people near and far that Jesus can make them a different person.

How many times we are tempted to try to build a ladder to Heaven rather than rely on the cross of Jesus! In our pride we often try to earn our way to Heaven by the things we do. Have you ever been tempted to think that doing any of the following would take you one rung higher on your “ladder”?
Going to church every Sunday or to Mass
every day…
Being careful to eat only the clean foods
God allows…
     Reading the Bible every day…
Saying prayers at regular and specific
times…
Being a church member in good standing…
     Being baptized…
     Obeying the Old Testament Laws…
While all of these things are good, they fall
short of making a ladder to Heaven. To make
us ready for Heaven, God Himself, must take
the precious, holy blood of Jesus and apply
it to our sins, and to our sinful, carnal nature,
supernaturally making us a new creation
(see II Cor. 5:17).
God gave His laws to His people to show them (and us) how to live in a way that is pleasing
to Him, thus avoiding many mistakes that
the ungodly make, and receiving the blessings
that He wants to give us.
Paul tells us in Galatians that no one is justified
in God’s eyes by obeying the law; rather,
the only way we can have right standing with
God is by trusting Jesus’ blood to cancel out all our sins. He even goes so far as to say that if we
could possibly be good enough to get to
Heaven by our own efforts, then Christ died for
no purpose (see Gal. 2:21).

by Mary Carothers

Why did Jesus need to die for us? He had
to die for our sins because there was no
other way to redeem mankind. We may be
very sure that if God could have redeemed us
any other way, He would never have planned
for Jesus to suffer so terribly. Also be assured
that the terrible suffering and shame that Jesus
endured was necessary and was planned by
God. He foretold it hundreds of years before in
His Word (see Isaiah 53, Psalm 22).
Each of us must recognize our need for a
Savior. We must realize that since we can never
keep the law perfectly, nor can we ever be
good enough to get into Heaven, we are in serious
trouble and need HELP. The problem for many of us is that we don’t want to humble ourselves and admit that we need help. When
we are willing to confess that we can never be
good enough to get to heaven, then help is
available in Jesus, our Savior. He lived the sinless
life that none of us could. With His own
blood He paid the penalty of death and separation
from the Father for our sins that God’s holiness
demanded. There is nothing more we can
do, absolutely nothing that will make us righteous
in God’s eyes but trust in the blood of
Jesus to take our sins away.
If this is true, Mary, then why does the Bible
have so much to say about the need for good
works? I’m so glad you asked! That’s what I’ll
talk about next month. See you then.

I read Prison to Praise and it made me realize
that I was lost and needed Jesus in my life.
Thank you for your prayers for me and my
family. THOMAS, COUNTY JAIL, NC

I am in jail in Dallas and read Prison to
Praise. It is a good book. The thing that got
me the most was Chapter seven on rejoicing.
I used it for a lesson in our Bible class that we
have every morning at 4:30am and everyone
was crying. Thank you. RODNEY, TX

I have been a drug user and a thief and
am currently in jail. I read Prison to Praise
through three times in my cell. I was full of
despair but I have found Jesus and have
learned to praise Him and give Him thanks in
all things. JESUS, FL

Thank you for the books. What a generous
gift!. BATTALION CHAPLAIN SMITH, AFGHANISTAN

Six out of ten readers of these words have not written a will. Therefore, your state has written one for you. No matter how large or small your estate, don’t permit your state to determine what happens to all your possessions when you die.
Sadly, this past year we have had many Praise News envelopes returned to us marked Deceased. Few, if any, expected to die. Their earthly goods may never be used to help bring someone to Christ.
When you write your will, please consider including the Foundation of Praise. In Heaven you can watch your earthly goods being used to win people to our Lord and Savior, Jesus
Eternal life - we cannot grasp the enormity of those two words. It is important that we understand that God has actually given us the potential of helping another person live for eternity. Someone living forever because of something we have done! That is an awesome thought. Our unlimited potential to help others is even more awesome.
God challenges us to realize and act on our potentials. Stop, now, and try to imagine what it will be like to see people in Heaven who are there because of something you have done.
Jesus told His disciples, I will show you how to fish for the souls of men (Matt. 4:19). Day after day He went from place to place telling people the Good News. Jesus lived and died to give us eternal life. He asked you and me to help others receive God’s gift. By word of mouth or in written form we can continue Jesus’ work of helping others know God’s Good News.
