Whenever
I think of
the Holy
Spirit, I'm
reminded
of God's
great love
for us. For
example,
when I read in Genesis 1:2 about the Holy Spirit
hovering over the face of the water, I think of
God's love, breathing order into chaos. How
about when God made Adam? I picture Him
kneeling down to where man was and breathing
life into his body. Job 33:4 says: The Spirit of
God has made me; the breath of the Almighty
gives me life. On the other hand, if He were to
withdraw His Spirit, we would surely perish (see
Job 34:14).
II Timothy 3:16 tells us that all Scripture is
"God-breathed". Can you picture the Holy Spirit
whispering His words into the minds and hearts
of the writers of the Bible? Today, the Holy Spirit
still whispers to us, in order to inspire us, correct
us, or to guide us into paths of righteousness.
Isaiah 30:21 expresses it this way: Whether you
turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a
voice behind you, saying, "this is the way; walk in
it." We call this the still, small voice of God.
When Elijah had run from Jezebel in I Kings 19, he went to the mountain of God.

There he waited for the Spirit of the Lord to speak to him. He heard God's voice, but not in the wind, the earthquake, or in the fire. God came to him in a still small voice.
In Old Testament times when the Spirit of the
Lord came upon certain men of God, it means that the Spirit of God was "breathed" into them. The breath of God was given to meet the particular need.
When Jesus appeared to His disciples after His
resurrection, He breathed on them and said receive the Holy Spirit (see John 20:22). This is given to every believer the moment we believe in Jesus as our Savior.
On the Day of Pentecost, as recorded in Acts 2:2, wasn't the "Mighty Rushing Wind" the very breath of God, breathed with powerful love upon the early disciples? The Church was brought to life that day, as God breathed His life-giving breath into it.
One last time the Bible tells us of the breath of God helping and blessing His children. In II Thessalonians 2:8, we are told that the Lord Jesus will destroy the anti-Christ with the breath of His mouth.
The breath of God! Like Adam, we cannot live without it. If we want to have spiritual victory while in this body, we must have the breath of the Holy Spirit flowing into us. |
