merlin carothers     When you were a child, did you ever want to see what you were getting for Christmas before that glorious day? Were you ever told you were getting something you really wanted, but could hardly believe it - until you received it? These childish thoughts and attitudes cling to us throughout our lives. It's hard to believe some of God's promises, because we just can't see how they can be true.
Thomas said: Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it (John 20:25 NIV).
Little children can believe that Jesus was born in Bethlehem. But life on earth had taught Thomas not to believe even what Jesus himself had told them.
Jesus had promised to come back to life in three days, but His closest friends did not believe Him. For three years He had proven to them that He was able to do anything - even raising the dead. But our human nature does not want to believe until we have seen with our own eyes.
God promises to work everything for our good if we believe Him but we often find that too hard to believe - unless He will show us a miracle.
Jesus' friends all wanted to believe that He would come back to life, but to them it seemed impossible. You and I want to believe that God is now working for our good, but sometimes we feel that we can believe only when we see Him do it. But our way is not God's way. He knows exactly when and what He wants to do for us. He wants us to learn and keep on learning to believe without seeing.
Sometimes we can be like a little child. We believe because we trust the one who told us - until they tell us something too hard to believe.

merlin carothers sermon

by Merlin Carothers

That's why we are here on earth. God wants us to learn to believe the impossible! Ephesians 3:20 (TLB) says, God, who by his mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of - infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes.
Throughout the Bible God was trying to get His people to believe Him. He knows that our sinful nature does not want to believe until we see, but He has made His Holy Spirit available to help us learn how to believe. Jesus presented God's promise to us:
Everything is possible for him who believes
(Mark 9:22-23 NIV). We may often cry out to God, “Please help me to believe,” because we do want to believe. In a still small voice He will tell us what to do. If we listen we can increasingly believe that God isusing even our problems for our good. This is what happened to me - I kept on believing that little, unimportant things were working for my good. Eventually my stubborn, “I want to see” spirit, began to be taken over by, “God, you are working for my good!” Of course Satan did not stop trying to convince me that nothing good would come out of difficult things. He does not give in easily.
Eventually we can look back and see the many good things that God has done for us through our difficulties. We can grow to understand more clearly the eternal purposes of God, and as we do the Spirit of Christmas grows in us!

T'was the night before Jesus came,
and all through the house
not a creature was praying, not one in the house.
Their Bibles were laid on the shelf without care
in hopes that Jesus would not come there.

The children were dressing to crawl into bed,
not once ever kneeling or bowing a head.
And Mom in her rocker with baby on her lap
was watching the late show while I took a nap.

When out of the East there arose such a clatter,
I sprang to my feet to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
tore open the shutters and threw up the sash!

When what to my wondering eyes should appear
but angels proclaiming that Jesus was here.
With a light like the sun sending forth a bright ray
I knew in a moment this must be THE DAY!

The light of His face made me cover my head
it was Jesus! Returning just like He had said.
And though I possessed worldly wisdom and wealth,
I cried when I saw Him in spite of myself.

In the Book of Life which He held in His hand
was written the name of every saved man.
He spoke not a word as He searched for my name;
When He said, “It's not here” my head hung in shame.

The people whose names had been written with love
He gathered to take to His Father above.
With those who were ready He rose without a sound
while all the rest were left standing around.

I fell to my knees, but it was too late;
I had waited too long and thus sealed my fate.
I stood and I cried as they rose out of sight;
Oh, if only I had been ready tonight.

In the words of this poem the meaning is clear;
The coming of Jesus is drawing near.
There's only one life and when comes the last call
we'll find that the Bible was true after all.

We don't know who
wrote this poem, but the message is so good we
could not improve on it! We wish you and your family a blessed and
Merry Christmas!

I was given Prison to Praise and You Can Be Happy Now as a Christmas present. My first thought was, 'Gee…thanks!' You see I'm not a big reader. I did ACT very thankful so I would not offend my sisterin- law. I thought to myself, I'll give it a look. What happened next was amazing. I could not put the books down. These written words spoke to me. I got so excited, and called my sister-in-law to thank her for this wonderful gift. I have now been giving them as gifts. As a non-reader who has re-read them, I thank you so much.  JUSTIN, MI

I send out 150 Christmas cards and include a copy
of the Bible Reading Chart in each card. I read
through the Bible each year and encourage others to
do the same. I also give out Prison to Praise as gifts
to waitresses and service people. I hope to meet many people in Heaven because of you and I working
together. DONNA, NM

What a blessing Secret Sins and What's on Your
Mind? has been to me. You are so right in saying just
how important our thoughts are. I knew certain
thoughts were not of God but didn't know how to get
rid of them. I cannot adequately express how grateful I am to God for leading me in your direction. ANNE, MD

I read You Can Be Happy Now and I loved it. I am
going to read it over and over again. TINA, IA

I laughed so much when I read You Can Be Happy
Now. I could almost hear God saying to you, 'Merlin,
what are you doing?' I'm still trying to praise God in
everything, it’s getting easier and I am happier for it. DONNA, AUSTRALIA

I'm reading You Can Be Happy
Now and even though I'm only
half way through, I've learned
that I have been blocking my
blessings. I don't want the book to end.
LYDIA, CA

I am re-reading God's Secret Weapon for the third time. Praising God in all things is a struggle but I'm not giving up. You've been such a blessing to me and so many others. VIRGINIA, MT

Your book God's Secret Weapon truly exemplifies
the years of revelation you have received from God! This is a must read for anyone who's true desire is to live in joy and to really please the Lord Jesus. I thank God you were inspired to take pen to paper.LISA, FL
