Merlin Carothers     Jesus said: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength (Mark 12:30).
Consider the great love of the Lord (Ps. 107:43).
Each year I love Mary more than the previous year. How is this possible? Because I have grown to know her better!
Our highest goal is to love God more. How do we learn to do that? Learn to know Him better!
What is God like?
Jesus gives us reasons to know and love the Father. One lesson He shared was His story of the Prodigal Son.
The Prodigal left home seeking fun and entertainment. He found his kind of “friends” and joined them, until all his money and “friends” were gone. Then he reluctantly headed for home, expecting well-deserved, harsh treatment from his father. To his surprise, his father received him with open arms – no rejection and with great joy.
The father was so overjoyed with his son’s return that he threw a big party and invited family and friends to rejoice with him. The son could not understand his father’s joy, but thought his father would eventually take him aside and tell him what a big disappointment he had been to his family. Indeed, the boy’s brother was angry and thought the father was acting foolishly. The brother thought the Prodigal did not deserve to be treated so well.
The father continued to rejoice and to honor his prodigal son by ordering the servants to get him the best possible clothing, and even a valuable ring.
Most of us have turned away at some time or other from honoring and obeying the Father, in order that we could do what we wanted. Later we returned to God and received His forgiveness and help. But then once again some other pleasure of the world would lure us to enjoy something our Father has told us to avoid.

We came back to God – again – and He greeted us with love and forgiveness – again. Can we keep on doing this all our lives? Possibly. But our Father loves us too much to forever ignore our disobedience. Like the loving Father He is, He may eventually say, Now you must suffer enough to help you realize what you are doing to yourself. Or if our mission in life is in jeopardy, God may permit severe difficulties to come immediately after our failure to listen and to obey Him.
Men and women in prison often tell me that they reached the limit of their disobedience and now are suffering the agony of being locked in a lonely cell for months or years. But God uses this time to give them another opportunity to receive His forgiveness and love. He seems to be saying, “Whatever it takes I will use it to bring you back home.” And many do find their way back to the Lord.
Jesus wants us to see that His Father loves us so much that He forgives and accepts us as His child, and always opens His arms to us when we want to come to Him. If you have acted somewhat like the Prodigal Son, now is the time to run back to your Father and rejoice, and expect Him to treat you far better than you deserve. He always wants us to grow in learning to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength.

Mary Carothers     Being a Christian is like receiving a priceless jewel.  Even as a diamond has many facets, each enhancing the other, belonging to Jesus is also many-faceted.  Centermost, of course, is our salvation: a free gift. We can never earn it since Jesus already paid for it with His precious blood.
One of the facets is giving thanks in all circumstances.  When we do this in  obedience, it establishes God’s sovereignty in our lives.   It also causes our love for Him to grow as we realize how completely involved He is in our daily lives.  When I thank and praise the Lord I am telling God that I am trusting Him, no matter what is happening.  I truly believe this releases His mighty power on our behalf.
Another facet is worship.  Not only is this God’s due, it brings us into His very presence where we receive the guidance and grace we need each day.
Physical healing is yet another facet.  Whether He chooses to heal us supernaturally, through the skill of doctors, or by natural means, Jesus is the Lord, our Healer.  In many cases, healing is His perfect will.  He may give us instant healing or gradual healing.  Or He may give us the ultimate healing: taking us home to be with Him.
Prosperity is a facet closely connected to healing.  Gone are the days when a person had to be poor in this world’s goods in order to be a committed Christian.  While the Lord may prosper us financially, He also desires that we be able to enjoy all things without having to own them (see II Cor. 6:10). Paul counsels in I Timothy 6:6 that godliness with contentment is great gain.
Nor is prosperity limited to finances.  God desires to prosper us in many areas of our lives: ministry to others, relationships, communing with Him, our efforts to grow spiritually – the list is nearly endless.

December Praise News
by Mary Carothers

Submission is an important facet. In these days of worldwide rebellion and anarchy, how greatly we need to learn to submit ourselves – not only to those in positions of authority – but in love to one another (see Eph. 5:21).
Who does not want the fruit of the Holy Spirit (see Gal. 5:22) to grow in their lives?  No one would deny their importance for Christians.  I think of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control as sort of being the personality of Jesus.  Surely Christ is glorified as He is formed in us (see Gal. 4:19).
Many believers are experiencing the reality of the gifts of the Spirit in their ministries.  Still another exciting facet.
While there are many more facets to explore, let me mention just one more - faith.  So important is faith that we cannot please God without it (see Heb. 11:6).  Paul says in Galatians 5:6 that it is faith, working through love, that is most important.
Each facet of the Gospel is significant in itself as well as being essential to the whole.  To have a vital Gospel to present to the world, we must have the balance of the whole Gospel.

Many thanks to all of you who called or wrote to ask how we were doing and to let us know that you were praying for us during our recent experience with the California wildfires. The Lord kept us safe, but many here were not so fortunate, so we ask that you continue to keep them in your prayers.

Our loss is Heaven’s gain. Our prayers
are with those who loved them.

Merry Christmas !

I am involved with the Bible School at the Losperfontain Prison in South Africa. We have 172 students and I told them about Prison
to Praise. I was able to buy one for them to read and have ordered Power in Praise. I would like to give them more books. Could you send me some for these students? My son has muscular dystrophy and is in a wheelchair. I have started thanking the Lord for this because I believe something good will come of it. It was hard for me to thank Him for this, but
I'd do it anyway. LYNETTE, E:MAIL

I've read and re-read your books and I never fail to be lifted and helped with the contents. Your ministry has helped me so much.
CAROLYN, CA

I love Praise News and every issue touches my heart and encourages me to praise God in all things. I read Prison to Praise in 1984 and all your books since then! We love you.
TOM & ELLIE, VA

Both of your articles in the October Praise News were right on target in addressing current
issues in my life. As you know, getting older means a change from helping to needing more helpwhich triggers more anxiety and anger. Thank you for your encouraging words.
RUTH, AR

I have used Prison to Praise for years to evangelize family, friends and even strangers! I was delighted to see that you supply free books to pregnancy centers. We would love to be able to supplement our Bible Study meetings with the gift of one of your books. Thank you.
VERA, PREGNANCY CENTER, SC

As a military veteran of 27 years I am so grateful to both of you for your tremendous sharing that you have given us. Merlin, I began
reading Praise News and listening to your tapes because you too are a veteran. I could really connect with you. Our Jesus has anointed
you both to bring us hope, joy and compassion when we need it the most. JO, AZ

Thank you for your excellent books. Without your clear teachings and all those testimonies I
am not sure I would have made it the last few years. I am reading them again and again and giving them to others. DRAGANA, E:MAIL

One of our inmates said, “Read this book, Prison to Praise!” Yes, I realize it has been around
for awhile but it took an inmate asking me to send for your other books to get me motivated to read it. Praise God that you were motivated to write these books! Thanks for sharing your gift of ministry with us. CHAPLAIN SHAWL,
S.B.COUNTY JAIL, CA
