Have you been worrying about something?
Once we choose our “worries”, we then begin to practice them. They can become imbedded in our minds. Then they feel right and acceptable to us. We may even believe that anyone would worry if they had our problems.
A man may worry about the upkeep of their car but the woman may worry about the upkeep of their home.
Jesus understood all our worries. His disciples worried that if He went to Jerusalem He would be killed (see John 11:8) but He wasn’t worried. Why? He knew something that they had not learned. He knew that God would take care of everything. Jesus’ way of thinking was foreign to His disciples. They thought any intelligent person would worry about being arrested and killed. After all, if Jesus was arrested they might be arrested too.
Jesus told them: Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid (John 14:27). To His disciples that idea was simply not practical, every day living.
To Jesus, worry was harmful – exactly opposite to faith in God. He wasn’t worried if they had no food. He knew God would provide it. But His disciples were “normal.” They knew what everyone had to do in order to have food. They knew the same facts about money, fish and the weather. They had learned what to worry about from experience. But Jesus had learned to trust God, so He taught and practiced let not your heart be troubled.
You and I have learned many reasons why we should worry. The idea that God wants to work everything for our good (see Rom.8:28) is difficult for us. People say, “But how could I be thankful for this or that?” Believing that God will keep His promise to make: All things work together for good to them that love Him, needs to be practiced until it becomes real to us!
When He was still young Jesus had increased in wisdom (see Luke 2:52) until He knew He could trust God to do whatever needed to be done. Later His disciples learned to believe what Jesus believed. They taught and wrote what they learned. Now you and I can learn and practice believing. We can learn that worrying is harmful but faith and trust are powerful to help us. How do we begin learning? The Bible is an excellent place to learn!

by Merlin Carothers

Anxieties can become so imbedded in us that it is difficult for us to realize what we are doing. Ephesians 5:19-20 is a wonderful place to learn not to worry. Paul gave us God’s plan to help us: understanding what the Will of the Lord is. Knowing God’s Will makes a huge impact on what we decide to do! We can learn His Will by studying what His Word teaches us. Be filled with the Spirit is a mighty resource that Jesus used. Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. This is a behavior we can learn to practice. Another way to change worry into rejoicing is by: Singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. Then comes our biggest leap forward: Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
When the Holy Spirit began to show me the many things I had been worrying about, and what I should begin doing, it was difficult for me to be obedient. Giving thanks for all things seemed wrong but I could not ignore what the Will of the Lord is. Step by step I learned that giving thanks always for all things is God’s wonderful plan to help us learn the joy and power we receive when we are obeying the Will of the Lord!
It is sometimes difficult for our stubborn nature to accept the blessings that God wants to give us but we can learn. As we learn we then have the joy of telling others what we have learned. Yes, they may think that we are not very realistic and react as Jesus’ disciples did. But eventually some people will be very thankful for the blessing you have given them. (I hear from these folks every day).
Giving thanks always overcomes the habit of worry! It opens our heart to the power of the Holy Spirit and He wants to teach us what the will of God is. God has given us many resources that will help us understand why Jesus was never worried about – anything.

What is one of the most expensive things we do? The answer may surprise you. One of the costliest indulgences we engage in is complaining. Grumbling, criticizing and fault-finding are costing us more than we can imagine.
Just for starters, having this attitude can cost us friendships as well as deeper relationships. Who wants to be around someone who is often griping or complaining about something or someone?
Many a job promotion can pass us by and go to someone less qualified if those who make the choices are turned off by our frequent fault-finding.
Proverbs 18:20 tells us that we must be satisfied with the words of our lips – whether good or bad. Although I don’t fully understand, it seems to be true that if we indulge in grumbling, we draw to ourselves an atmosphere and spirit of complaining. This in turn causes us to continue and even increase this harmful attitude and behavior.
More than anything else, grumbling hurts our relationship with the LORD. Although His love for us never changes, and He doesn’t disown us if we are chronic complainers, God is not able to bless us as He desires.
In the account of God delivering His people out of bondage in Egypt, we have a pretty clear illustration of how the Lord feels about fault-finding. Beginning at the Red Sea, their reaction was to criticize Moses.  Next, they muttered against God for not providing any water; again later, when the water was bitter at Marah. When there was nothing to eat, they whined and
complained. When they got tired of the manna, what did they do? That’s right, they whined and complained again. Instead of appreciating Gods provision, they lamented their lack of variety. They

wanted meat. By now, God was fed up with their murmuring and destroyed some of them.
It is important for us to understand that God considers complaining a sin. He sees it as rejection of Himself (see Numbers 11:20) and His provision for us.
The Israelites developed such an attitude of griping and moaning that when the time came to go in and take the good land that the Lord had promised them, they were unable to believe and trust Him. This time when they grumbled, it cost them dearly. All of the unbelieving adults died in the desert. Of that generation, only Joshua and Caleb eventually entered the land and received God’s full blessing.
What about the young people under the age of twenty? They were forced to wander in the desert for many years because of the sin of their elders. An attitude of fault-finding always hurts those around us.
In referring to the Israelites, I Corinthians 10:6-11 tells us all this was recorded to warn us not to follow their example of murmuring and thus setting their hearts on evil.
Lord, help us to be over-comers in this area. Help us to develop an attitude of thanksgiving and praise … to You and to those around us. We want to receive and enjoy the blessings You desire to give us.

Your books and newsletter have blessed me for over 30 years! I have read eight of your books, many of them over and over. Recently I read You Can Be Happy Now and it is so phenomenal. Thank you for that book. I have thanked God for you hundreds of times!       DIANA, MS

I had to write and give you a great big THANK YOU for your book You Can Be Happy Now. I began reading one section of this book each morning and WOW, WOW, WOW. It amazes me how each day God continues to change my disposition and increase my trust in Him. Just as you have said, slowly His peace, joy and happiness just keep increasing and permeating and dominating every single part of my life! Even daily irritations just quickly fade away. I do not have the words to express my enormous gratitude for how you have helped to change
my life.
VICKIE, LA

I receive your newsletter and was struck by how many letters referred to You Can Be Happy Now. I began reading it and it is making the biggest difference already. All of your books have had such a great impact on my life. How faithful God is to answer praise, and how quickly even we who know about its power in our lives let if fall by the wayside as the journey gets tougher, and we don't see immediate answers. How great to know that God is still in control. God bless you.
KAY, PA

I treasure reading Praise News and re-read You Can Be Happy Now often.
