The Apostle Paul had no money or computer to help him get the Good News to others. But He had the Good News in his heart. He knew that Jesus had told His followers to get this news to EVERYONE. What made Paul different from most men was the strong faith he had that God was with Him no matter what happened to him. So instead of writing about all the problems that he had in prison, he wrote about his joys and victories. He explained his attitude: I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances (Phil. 4:11 NIV).
For many years my thoughts centered on the things that I did not have. When my prayers were not answered I was often unhappy. My unhappiness made me doubt that God was working in me. I could not understand what Paul meant when he said: God who gives you hope, will keep you happy and full of peace as you believe Him (Rom. 15:13 TLB). Finally, I came to understand that I should believe that He was giving me happiness and peace! Gradually I realized that what I believed was actually happening to me!
Our unhappy thoughts have a great influence on how we live and feel. And when our attention centers on the victories we believe God has given us, then those victories become real to us even before we experience them!
Paul wrote: Rejoice in the Lord (Phil. 4:4).When? Always. Why? Because that allows God’s best plan to become ours even before we see it happen. But if our thoughts center on what we want, those thoughts often lead us into unhappiness.
Children are often on a fast track to doing things that parents have learned are harmful. Parents face a nearly unending struggle in working to prevent children from doing many of the things they want to do. In the same way, many of us are striving to have something that God knows is not best for us. But like children we long for what we want.
When Paul was in prison he could easily have concentrated on the fear and uncertainty that many prisoners endure. Instead, he determined to write about the victories he believed were his, and what he believed God wants for everyone who believes in Jesus as Savior. |

When we center our thoughts on what Jesus has done for us, His victories become ours! Prison bars, problems and sickness may not immediately disappear, but Jesus came to help us be whatever God wants.
Paul’s faith in God has caused him to help millions of hurting people during the past 2,000 years. You and I can be God’s instruments to help people too, but first we must want His will more than we want our own.
Jesus promised to help us if we believe He is helping us. We have His help to accomplish whatever God designed us to be. We can do what we are designed to do, by following His directions.
We can set our thoughts on becoming whatever God wants us to be. Easy? Often not. But His rewards are enormous. In fact they are exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us (Eph. 3:20). God worked mightily through Paul because Paul believed – even while chained in prison – that God was doing what was best to help Paul fulfill his mission. Paul did not squander his opportunity by thinking about his problems. He thought about people like you and me. He thought about what God wanted him to do to help us!
There are people who will never hear God’s Good News unless you and I permit Him to use us. I know from personal experience that He can use anyone of us in ways that are excededing abundantly beyond what we imagine. Let’s not waste our opportunities by worrying about our past, present or future. Let’s spend our time and energies in praising Him and letting His Good News flow through us to others. |

Have you ever seen that slogan? Perhaps on a bumper sticker? Here’s one I saw recently: “Tithe If You Love Jesus: Anybody Can Honk.” That always gives me a chuckle when I think of it.
In all my 75 years of life I’ve never once thought of a clever slogan. But some people have a talent for thinking of clever ways of expressing things.
When I was a young adult, I heard someone say, “Until we can give God control of our wallet we have not completely given ourselves to Him.” Through the years I’ve remembered those words. They are simple yet profoundly true. At one time I was so fearful and anxious about the financial instability in my life I couldn’t imagine letting go of my money. It was my “security blanket.”
But then one day Jesus came sweeping into my life and took away my fears. The Holy Spirit opened my understanding (see Eph. 1:18) to really know that the Lord was in control of my life. What a joy it became to give into His Kingdom.
When we give God control of our finances we are acknowledging His Lordship in that area of our lives. When we thank Him (see Eph. 5:20) and praise Him in difficult times, we are also acknowledging His Lordship in our lives. We are saying, “I am trusting You, Lord, even thought I don’t like my circumstances.” Even when the tears run down our faces, we can say, “Lord I trust Your loving wisdom. And I give You the sacrifice of my praise” (see Heb. 13:15). |

This is honoring to God, of course, when we trust Him in the scary places of life. For example, if we are going to lose our home we can choose to trust God by thanking Him for wherever He will help us find a place to live. If we lose our job, we need to do all we can to find another one, while trusting and thanking the Lord for whatever job we can find – even if it is only temporary. These are only a couple of examples but the principle is true in all the circumstances in our lives.
As we are learning to always give thanks to the Lord, something wonderful begins to happen inside us. We find our faith and trust in God is growing. How exciting it is to suddenly realize, “Hey, I really do trust God in all my problems! NOW I understand that God is working on my attitude and emotions to help me grow in Christ. Wow!”
As you look back to, say, a year ago, can you see that you have grown in Christ? If you’re not sure, how about trying to praise and thank the Lord for a particular problem in your life? As you persist in this, I believe you will find your faith and trust in God growing stronger. |

I am an Army Specialist currently in Iraq. I just finished
reading Prison to Praise and I just had to let you know
what a great and powerful story you have! I literally had
tears of joy from some of your testimonies and I still feel a
great joy as I am writing to you. Words can't even begin to
describe the overwhelming feeling I have at this moment.
I know that God has us over here for His purpose and not
ours. Thanks for sharing your message.
ROGELIO, E-MAIL
I've just finished reading Prison to Praise. You book had
me in tears quite a few times but good tears, I might add.
When I came to prison I was against God and religion but
your book has brought me much joy and I wish to live a
righteous life in the eyes of God from now on.

My high school son was doing drugs when I found and
read Prison to Praise. After reading it, I turned him over to
the Lord. He joined the Navy and while home on leave he
said, “Mother, I decided if I was going to do something
with my life I had to make a change”. He has been drug
free since. Praise God! Thank you for your books. I really
have learned to praise the Lord for everything!

I recently found my yellowed copy of Prison to Praise.
What a blessing to remember those glory days when we
were discovering the principle of thanking God in all circumstances. I attended a large meeting that you and Mary
held in Tucson. Thanks to you I have lived a life of praise
and worship. Even now I am thanking God for my prostate
cancer and praising Him every day. JOHN, AZ
A young man came to fix a leak in our bathroom. I asked
him if he liked to read, and offered him my last Prison to
Praise book. He took it and I'm elated. What a blessing
you are to thousands who see their need of our Lord and
Savior. MARY JO, OK
I am an Anglican Priest in Canada. Right now my wife and
I are living in the United Kingdom where she is stationed
as a chaplain in the Canadian forces. My wife and I have
given out over 1000 copies of Prison to Praise. It is absolutely true to say that no other book, except the Bible, has
revolutionized my life like Prison to Praise did over twenty years ago. I re-read this book every New Year. I wish
you continued blessings in your ministry. RON, E-MAIL

For years Prison to Praise has been my most favorite
book. I gave them out in my practice as a psychologist. I
am now a Chaplain for the Hamilton County Sheriff's jail
complex and I would like to request some of your books to
hand out. I believe Prison to Praise could have a great
impact on a multitude of lives here.

For years my wife and I have struggled with what to do
with panhandlers. Are we aiding their addiction or depriving someone in need? Our solution is that I now keep
Prison to Praise on my front seat with a dollar bill sticking
out. It encourages people to take the book and if they are
homeless then they will have something to read. Now we
go around looking for the ones standing on the corner with
their signs and leave the rest in the Holy Spirit's hands.
JIM AND LUCY, OR
I gave Prison to Praise to a friend who gave it to her
youth pastor. He read it and now it is “mandatory” for the
youth to read it!
KATHRYN, TX
My husband is in the Army Reserves currently serving in
Iraq. He manages a place where soldiers come to recoup
from a trauma before they go back to their job. We read
your book years ago and he would like copies of Prison to
Praise to pass out to the soldiers. He feels it would really
be a good book to share with them. Thank you and God
bless you. BEATRICE, OH
I've been reading Prison to Praise. It was given to me by
my daughter's boyfriend, who received it while in jail. He
accepted Christ as his Savior. I thought at first it was just a
farce, but the more time I spend with him I know God has
answered prayer. I was so touched by the testimony I just
had to write and let you know you now have more new
friends in Christ! KELLEY, E-MAIL
Prison to Praise blessed me forty years ago. Two years
ago I ran across it again and was so greatly blessed that I
am ordering lots to share with others. LOUISE, AR
Boy are we glad you're having a special on the Prison to
Praise books. The 500 we got recently are almost all gone.
PTL! We ask people if they like to read and if they do we
offer them a book. JOE AND BEV, WA
